friend feed
Photo Hawk
My wife doesn't let me use her camera anymore. She's more of a "portrait" person. She calls me "abstract" and I'm fine with that. Many other people though can be and do both. Take Thomas Hawk for instance. He's someone I met on www.Friendfeed.com . You can find him here: http://www.thomashawk.com/
Friend Feed likes compatibilty chart
It's like an Ink Blot test. The stats can mean"hey cool, I share these people same interests" or "Hey, I think like these people????"
Personally I'm proud to like the same things Mitchell Tsai( www.friendfeed.com/mitchelltsai ) likes. He's a number cruncher and I, I hate numbers.....
Twit-Out's Sunset
In a couple more hours, the Twit-out Started by Blogger Bwana ( http://www.bwana.org/ ) and endorsed by Robert Scoble( http://scobleizer.com/ ) will be over. I asked the group would this liberated feeling today stop them from using Twitter, and most quickly said no. That's fine, we were basically just trying to 1)Get a feel for Friend Feed without the Twitter noise and 2) Give Twitter a chance to get it's bearings straight. Maybe today's lull showed the twitter brass that not apologizing for outages is very unprofessional. Maybe they used this time to utilize more code and scaled twitter some. Maybe they didn't even notice what we did today( http://www.techmeme.com/ shows nothing about today)... I tell you one thing though, if Twitter goes down tomorrow because we all jumped back on it, I'm personally uninstalling it. What do you think?
No Twitter Day
May 21st is don't use twitter day. After many complaints about twitter's outages, some influential bloggers (http://friendfeed.com/bwana)have decided to give Twitter a rest. So how do we communicate in the meantime? Enter www.friendfeed.com . This site also has twit-like options as well as other rss features. You can add/see flickr, your blog, googlereader, youtube, etc. The great thing about it is that it allows you to have a THREADED conversation. What's that? Well, say you would like to start a conversation with ALL of your friends at the same time. Friend feed does that. Say someone jumps in the convo late. Will they get lost in the sauce? No, a threaded conversation shows everyone's input. No need worrying if someone has already said the witty reply you were going to give. It's all right there. Nice, neat and easy to see, try that with @Twitter...
Web 2.0 Toolbox
Almost shut it down for the night. Scoble at http://friendfeed.com/scobleizer continues to spark the conversational flame. Philly's own Drew Olanoff( http://www.drewolanoff.com/post/33316454 ) responded to Scoble's comment about hating Twitter. At first I sided with Friendfeed, thinking this was about platform preference. As this dragged on though, I realized how much I love both applications. These are all rss tools, ways to follow and interact with each other in the internet. Polarization takes more time out here. Blu-ray won because of money. Free applications get better but they are still free. There's no need to pick sides when one can have both without any penalties. Any real Web 2.0 business person usaully has Google reader, twitter, an IM client and now Friend feed open just to stay on top of the news. Not just tech news, but world news, politics, sports and local news. Actually I'm visiting websites less because I can use twitter to pick and choose what news site will have the Info I want. Even Comcast customer care is on Twitter (@comcastcares )! Before this year is up, there will be even more sites and programs using rss, ajax and other new technology. I don't want a Do-it-all tool. I like carrying a toolbox full of free stuff :)...
Friend Feed pop ups
Well almost resisted posting about friend feed or twitter this week. What broke the silence was after being on FF all day, tonight I happened to hover over who left a post and Whaaat, a pop up of the person's profile appeared!!! That's cool. But this was in the program called prism. How about the website? Yes it does it there too. How about Twhirl? That's a no go. It's interesting that right after every AIR app upgrades, FF get an upgrade that you can only be seen on it's turf...Well it probably isn't meant that way, it just looks that way. Your opinions on this? Sure, why not? BTW Loic, why haven't you subscribed? ;-)
Organic VS. Synthetic Blog Success
I really can't bring myself to pay for clicks. I listen to certain podcasts everyday and even though it's a good way to "test", I just can't do it. What is frustrating is the fact that Google organically sends me more traffic than all of the blog submittal sites put together! Should I be happy about this? I guess...
In other news, I've been trying to tread water in the elite blogger ocean called Friend Feed. Since it's still new only the techies are really using it. Also just as hard is testing the desktop apps that blows through the AIR(get it?). Lately I've been comparing Alert Thingy with /Feedalizr... Well um Alert thingy works and Feedalizr freezes(see pic)...The weird thing is that while frozen, pop up alerts come up but I can't open them. Oh well there will be more apps and more sleepless nights. If you had more success with Feedalizr, drop a comment and subscribe to my blog. :-)
The Friend Feed Parade
Twitter owes Co-founders Bret Taylor, Jim Norris, Paul Buchheit and Sanjeev Singh a check. They have single handedly saved twitter via Friend Feed. Just a couple of months ago after Pownce kicked it into high gear, The influential techies were getting tired of twitter. Facebook integrated it's feed stream and a hundred different websites did the same. So what's so "killer" about FriendFeed? It's power and simplicity IMO. You can comment, post and keep up to date on all of your feeds, twits and friends/contacts. It's a social network made up of layers. You can have CEO's, software engineers, famous Silicon Valley bloggers and just your friends all at the same time but not mixed in together, you can't see my buddy twit about the Sixers unless you know him/her too. The playing field is so level, a lowly IS Field Engineer like me can get the tech news almost (almost) before www.techcrunch.com does, if not at the same time.
So, where do we go from here? Take a look at www.toluu.com and www.socialmedian.com. There's others like www.alltop.com but toluu and social median has a better feel to it. As an user, getting an email of the latest stories in the categorizes I choose is nice. As a blogger, I'm literally salivating at the thought of one of these Betas going public along with my submitted blog...It's a win-win situation and I'm glad to be here to see the Friend Feed Parade...
When A Comment Becomes A Blog
This is what www.Pirillo.com was talking about on his podcast. Leave good comments. I perused www.Veronicabelmont.com and found a real good topic I wanted to vent on. Want to hear it? Here it is:
"It's amazing how twitter is still afloat in this IM/SMS world. When the nuance of Pownce, Jaiku and even Facebook Chat gets old, Twitter stays fresh! And Now adding Twitter to Friend Feed opens even more doors! Most of the info I appreciated on FF came from Twitter... Isn't that ironic?"
Watched "Stomped the yard" again. I do this to see what my sister saw in stepping. She went to a college in North Carolina before she died and I guess she was trying to immerse herself in the environment. I think it looks silly personally but I never went to college(GASP!). Can someone fill me in on this subject?
