Glenn Fleishman On New Network Ownership | Wireless Philadelphia

"This lets Philadelphia achieve a number of different goals," says Glenn. "It means that they could wind up becoming a model city for this kind of approach."

Just received an email from Ryan Nichols/Wireless Philadelphia. His title says "Communications Officer". Sounds like PR to me. The position kinda reminds me of the movie "Fun With Dick and Jane". I think Jim Carrey was the "VP of Communications" in that one,lol... Anyway he directed me to the post highlighted above from earlier this month. It includes audio so take a listen and tell me how doomed we really are in Philly.

Black Web 2.0 » Blog Archive » The Black Internet Space: Different but not Really

"That said, the one place where we are really able to be ourselves, even in the online environment, is in the blogsphere (compare comments on say, a Perez Hilton blog post vs. crunktastikal). The blog sphere is “our community” online. That is why I am looking forward to the Black Weblog Awards. Every year there are a few cool sites that pop up that I managed to somehow miss."

Great article about the Black online sites equivalent to main websites/blogs. Here's my two cents:
"I had to leave my email to comment on this one(That’s right,I’m a loyal email Subscriber, you should be too!)! My FORMER business partners would constantly clown me b/c I admired Diddy’s business plan. His major was business and he did what he felt he had to do to be successful. On the internet sometimes it feels the same way. Some are mad if you aren’t “keeping it real” in your blogs or if NOT mentioning the everyday things in the hood means you aren’t black enough…Sorry, but like Jade said there are as many facets to being black online as a black diamond….Take this site for example, this site is the Black Techcrunch!"

IBM Inks Innovative Technology Agreement With Pike County Schools - MarketWatch

"As part of the 5-year agreement, IBM will provide Pike County Schools with an internet access service that gives older PCs the ability to access the internet and applications in a manner similar to more current systems."

Why is IBM experimenting on our kids? It's bad enough when Cisco connects itself to everything tech in it's commercials. Why is IBM acting like an Internet Service Provider? Is this their next step after selling almost everything to Lenovo? I wonder if this a test to see if they can do this in a b to b fashion or will they try it on the consumer side too?

Deregulation’s history of empty promises

"Comcast and Verizon lobbied side by side in 2004 to pass legislation in Pennsylvania, so alarmed were they by the city of Philadelphia’s community wireless plans. Now any other city in that state will find it impossible to do the same. In three small neighboring cities in Illinois—St. Charles, Batavia and Geneva—SBC and Comcast fought plans by groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Jaycees to build a community fiber-optic network. The citizens’ group backing the “Fiber for Our Future” referendum went down to political defeat twice, in 2003 and 2004, after a well-funded advertising and misleading public relations campaign."

Well, well, well. I guess we won't see the "Free wireless" setup in Philadelphia any time soon. Oh sure it will happen thanks to Wireless Phladelphia. Sadly though, an uphill battle to benefit us means more profit for the two mentioned above.Thanx for nothing...

New Social Media Measurement Webcast Tutorial Reveals How to Measure the ROI of Blogs and All Things Web 2.0

"Attendees will learn how to monitor and measure the effects of campaigns utilizing such media as YouTube, Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and more, as well as how to justify significant investments in social media communications programs."

I'm sorry, but after Seeing Hancock, I'm even more obsessed with PR than I was before. I don't fully understand the job position but I guess it's like being an Attorney. Some clients will be truly innocent and defending them is an honor while some clients really are slimeballs but they hired you to help them. I suppose Companies in general use PR to keep their name in the public's ear. It's like preemptive advertising maybe?

Then there's the companies that profit from edangering the envirment. I suppose they need the most spinning. Well, the article above gives PR folks tips on how to leverage the web in their favor.BTW what's all this Black Hat PR stuff Igor the Troll talks about? Curious...

We are still waiting for a concrete answer to Philadelphia's Wireless situation. Some say the comcast lobbyists are slowing things down. What do you think?

Philadelphia Getting Free Internet, O RLY?

It's 11:28pm and I just remembered to read my email! Not cool since I missed an email from Wireless Philadelphia's CEO Greg Goldman at 05:16pm. He was excited about his Joint Venture with Mayor Nutter to assume Earthlink's Wireless network. Here's an excerpt from His/The Blog:

"Today, Mayor Michael A. Nutter and Wireless Philadelphia have reached an agreement with a local investor group to take over operations for Philadelphia's Wireless Initiative. Under the terms of the deal, the local investor group is assuming operation of the existing EarthLink infrastructure and will enhance and expand the network as part of their plan to eventually bring free wireless to the City. Philadelphia is excited about this opportunity to become the first major city in America to provide wireless access to all of its citizens at no cost."

Wait that title wasn't fair. We are all just trying to install and use new software and enrich our lives with many tools right? WRONG! We are trying to find the app that can STOMP our currently favorite software/programs/websites...

Did you get that? When did that transition happen? Why now do I prefer not using my email program or desktop rss reader or even All of the music I bought(yes I paid for it) off of Itunes? Why would I just sit on www.gmail.com and use it to email, instant message and twitter? What allows me to read any and everything from google reader, www.friendfeed.com or www.feedly.com instead of using my thunderbird or something else? Is streaming music from www.pandora.com a sellout? I had a DJ give me the evil eye before when I mentioned Itunes so what would he do to me now? Lastly, what about poor MSFT and their old money train called Office? Hmm, there are so many better, quicker options online. I even use Google docs more than I use Open Office.

I took this pic at 71st and Greenway, Phila Pa. This area is very"urban" with a housing development and all. Do they need the internet? Have you been places where it's safer to keep your head down when you walk to avoid seeing any "dangerous activity"? Have you lived where the billboards advertise Malt Liquor? That stuff is nasty! How about where schools have more security guards than students? A young person has to look up somewhere to see that what's in front of them is not the only thing that matters. They have to know GTA is not the only game out there or that Music is just a small facet of the many things they can learn and discuss.
The internet can be what you make it, that part of it's "Net Neutrality" . I'm sorry that the libraries are threatened by the online reference tools, but when the one you go to doesn't have anything to help you mentally "elevate" yourself, what's the use? Many of the comments I read on this situation blames the old Mayor for Earthlink not finishing the Philly Wifi project. I'm not into Politics, I'm into less kids failing tests and more kids having that look in their eyes when they've just learned something new. Do they need the internet? WE ALL NEED THE INTERNET!!!
