WiMAX in Emerging Markets: Operator Lessons in Strategy and Technology

Looks like Comcast better hire more lobbyists. Wimax is getting a strong foothold on countries worldwide. It will only be a matter of time before mighty Comcast will have to give us a choice for the internet. Oh of course we have DSL and Wifi as an option now, but they aren't really the best choice. DSL is unbelievably annoying with each company having their own set of install rules. Wifi is a joke city-wise and those who do have it can't use it on a busy day with car stereo and cellphone activity outside. The complaint with cable internet is that the price rises without warning. Well, who's there to stop them or give real competition? That's right, WiMAX...It's Cable internet bashing time...

Glenn Fleishman On New Network Ownership | Wireless Philadelphia

"This lets Philadelphia achieve a number of different goals," says Glenn. "It means that they could wind up becoming a model city for this kind of approach."

Just received an email from Ryan Nichols/Wireless Philadelphia. His title says "Communications Officer". Sounds like PR to me. The position kinda reminds me of the movie "Fun With Dick and Jane". I think Jim Carrey was the "VP of Communications" in that one,lol... Anyway he directed me to the post highlighted above from earlier this month. It includes audio so take a listen and tell me how doomed we really are in Philly.

We are still waiting for a concrete answer to Philadelphia's Wireless situation. Some say the comcast lobbyists are slowing things down. What do you think?

Philadelphia Getting Free Internet, O RLY?

It's 11:28pm and I just remembered to read my email! Not cool since I missed an email from Wireless Philadelphia's CEO Greg Goldman at 05:16pm. He was excited about his Joint Venture with Mayor Nutter to assume Earthlink's Wireless network. Here's an excerpt from His/The Blog:

"Today, Mayor Michael A. Nutter and Wireless Philadelphia have reached an agreement with a local investor group to take over operations for Philadelphia's Wireless Initiative. Under the terms of the deal, the local investor group is assuming operation of the existing EarthLink infrastructure and will enhance and expand the network as part of their plan to eventually bring free wireless to the City. Philadelphia is excited about this opportunity to become the first major city in America to provide wireless access to all of its citizens at no cost."

I took this pic at 71st and Greenway, Phila Pa. This area is very"urban" with a housing development and all. Do they need the internet? Have you been places where it's safer to keep your head down when you walk to avoid seeing any "dangerous activity"? Have you lived where the billboards advertise Malt Liquor? That stuff is nasty! How about where schools have more security guards than students? A young person has to look up somewhere to see that what's in front of them is not the only thing that matters. They have to know GTA is not the only game out there or that Music is just a small facet of the many things they can learn and discuss.
The internet can be what you make it, that part of it's "Net Neutrality" . I'm sorry that the libraries are threatened by the online reference tools, but when the one you go to doesn't have anything to help you mentally "elevate" yourself, what's the use? Many of the comments I read on this situation blames the old Mayor for Earthlink not finishing the Philly Wifi project. I'm not into Politics, I'm into less kids failing tests and more kids having that look in their eyes when they've just learned something new. Do they need the internet? WE ALL NEED THE INTERNET!!!

Earthlink couldn't "Give" the wifi system away and so will start the withdrawal next month. I just checked Wireless Philadelphia's blog and they said it's not over yet...

So I finally got around to submitting my "Uneven Ground" philly internet situation to www.phillyfuture.org .I thought it was a safe enough post but I was wrong. Greg Goldman,CEO of Wireless Philadelphia actually sent me an email about the subject (gulp!). He mentioned the 10 year agreement the City has with Earthlink and how Wireless Philadelphia is totally committed to keeping the Internet lights on. Good. So glad to see a company this dedicated and a PR team this sensitive to bloggers and the Philadelphia community...
