(rerun...)Had a podcast overload already this week. TWIT is finally back and I finished listening to the revamped Gilmore gang. Everyone was kinda focused on one thing, Twitter. What's the appeal with twitter? Well let's do a quick outline of computer communications. Most people today started off with email that allows us to send and recieve messages. That was cool because it was faster than snail mail with a stamp. In the background we had IRC, which allowed us(and still does!)to talk to many at the same time,instantly. Then IM and cellphone texting got popular around the same time by the younger crowd.So what's new now? Twitter hasn't built any new backbone for communication, it's just a more malleable tool. What do I mean? With IM if the person isn't "online" you can't send a message, but with twitter you can. With email sometimes we get long messages from others that we rarely read the whole way thru, but with twitter you only get 140 characters so get to the point! With text messaging you look silly if you are furiously pounding thumbs on your cell to say OMG,LOL,IMHO but with twitter grown men discuss business and the fate of companies. Yes being flexible means you can just twit about the mundane things of life if you want to. Also IRC allows you to make blast comments to everyone that's smart enough to know what IRC is, Twitter sends blasts to the common man... If we are going down the 140 character road, I'm ok with that because apparently so is CNN, Newspapers and other tradition forms of mass media. Isn't that cool?
