Why Will The Gphone Squash The Iphone and WM Phones?

It's an interesting day for the folks at Google. Not only do we see the supposed GPhone (AKA, the HTC Dream) get trotted out to the FCC, and hear new rumors about the device's release date, but now there's a brand-spanking-new release of the Android SDK available. The version? 0.9 -- a number which puts this dangerously close to a number that most would consider non-beta.

I ask the question again. Why will The proposed Gphone squash what's out there now?
1) Price. Google is not out to make a killing in an already crowded market. There philosphy is "don't be evil" and the one I made up "Let's try something different". This is all speculation of course, but, let's say google uses it's advert platform to offset the manufacturing and carrier costs. Would it be cheaper than the Iphone and Window mobile phones? Probably.

2) Software. Google's cloud loving software should work like a breeze on mobile phones. Open api and open source(isn't that the same thing?) software should flourish on this and even if they keep everything in the cloud, think of the space that will leave for processing power. Most smartphones now freeze up due to lack of space/ram/rom.

This is just me Dreaming about the Google "Dream" but if just these two points are true, Smart phones will get more affordable fast! I'm definitely for that... What do you think?
