Ovi Store sales over device types – January 2010

Dear Editors,
Come the tenth, cometh your report courtesy of Tamoggemon Ltd. As
always, read on below to find out more about which devices move content
in Nokia’s Ovi Store.

For the period of the 1st January to the 31st of January, the
distribution looks like this. The figures in brackets are last month’s
percentage:

Nokia N97: 54,4% (46,5%)
XM5800: 36,5% (40,6)
XM5530: 6,8% (6,2%)
XM5230 1,5% (3,1%)
Unknown: 0,75% (0%)
X6: 0% (3,2%)

One can clearly see that the main sale getters remain the Nokia N97 and
the XM5800. Lower-end touchscreen devices currently do not amount for
significant moved produce – this can be due to their owners being less
willing to invest, but can also be considered a pointer to lack of
device distribution.

Regarding Sony Ericsson: we originally planned to offer you data from SE
in this report. However, getting content into the store takes so long
(25 days and counting) that we don’t expect to have any meaningful data
till March (aka 10th of April).

As usual: the data was generated by analyzing the sales of Tamoggemon’s
S60v5 products LocaNote (http://myphillynetwork.com/oaz) and
TouchCalc (http://myphillynetwork.com/tiF) on the Ovi Store.

via Rumor: Apple Has Another Tablet In The Works. More Like A Mac Than An iPhone..

Ok, Techcrunch is known for breaking tech news first and MG Siegler is known for the new kid on Techcrunch’s block w/spunk, but iPad part II, really? Would Apple tease us with an entry level iPad for the Mainstream and then hit us at WWDC with a bigger MAC OS version?

I truly hope so because as much as some bloggers try to fit the word “Amazing” around the new iPad, it’s not. It’s under powered and too simple to use in any real business fashion, seriously. It’s a relevant question though because today I was cornered by two users asking if my “powers that be” will consider giving them tablets to work with instead of laptops. Let’s entertain that thought.

If the Mac Tablet is to be a reality in the business world, it will have to multi-task first and foremost. Most companies today use a mix of native and web based programs so to not have them all open at the same time to cross reference each other would be a deal-breaker. I visited one day trader to find four lcd screens full of moving graphs and data flowing back and forth, can the new ipad handle that? No… Can the rumored iPad part II do that? Hopefully.

How about power? 1ghz of speed is cool for surfing and using the web based version of Photoshop.com, but can you really “work” with that? Not really, If you think Indesign choked before try using it on an old Macbook. This shows that Apple has to put a beast of a CPU in their next iteration if they want to be sleek and attack the business marketshare at the same time.

Two answer the first question, yes I do believe their is another bigger, stronger Apple Tablet waiting in the wings… Can we afford when it comes out? That’s another question for later (June 2010)…

How do you save a company that sells products people don’t know they need? This has to be the question Steve Jobs has been asking himself ever since he was escorted back to the business he helped create.

How do you promote something most consumers don’t understand? Something most tech people know has better counterparts? The only way I know is to create a “brand” around it. To make it “cool” as it were…

Is the iPhone cool? How about the new iPad? We all remember growing up and how it felt to be or want be cool. To be accepted is a very powerful thing. Was that the Apple co-founder’s plan? “If I’m going to resurrect this company, I have to single handed make people think they need what we sell…”

Well according to the above video, he hit his mark dead center. The Incredibly famous singer Rihanna is not aware of the new iPad but she is aware that if you don’t own an Apple device you are labeled lame. Wow, think about that for a second. No flash, no multitasking, 500 dollars. This device makes it cool to do less than what any other device in it’s category does.

Is that bad? No, that is called marketing and product placement. Tell us how beautiful and appealing this device is and we will agree. Tell us over and over how we need this thing to fully enjoy the web and we will agree. Why? Because Apple is cool and so is the iPad…I guess….

Apple Launches iPad.

Lol, It’s bad when the salesman has to visualize  it’s product for you. He sat on a couch and demonstrated right? Wow, so let’s recap:

iPad runs almost all of the over 140,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®.

The iTunes® Store gives you access to the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 11 million songs, over 50,000 TV episodes and over 8,000 films including over 2,000 in stunning high definition video.

Apple also announced the new iBooks app for iPad, which includes Apple’s new iBookstore, the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile device. The iBookstore will feature books from major and independent publishers.

It’s specially made cpu processor worries me. Having a incredible deadline and momentous pressure to do what no one else has done spells consumer disaster, imho. Don’t get me wrong, 1ghz speed has become the standard for low power mobile devices and the iPad falls right in place with that. Bigger than a net book but smaller than a Laptop. I get it Steve, I really do.

But (wait for it) can I squeeze it into my non-consumer life? I don’t pay for much and the iPad is made for purchasing things. Applications, games, music, videos and now ebooks/papers. Everything I need is free but not available for this new fangled device: Youtube.com? Nope, no flash support. Hulu.com? Nope, no flash support!  My son’s visits to cartoon network? NO! NO FLASH SUPPORT!!! How about my girls’ visits to Disney’s Tinkerbell site….Oh I get it.

If I have to buy an app to substitute for what I can do freely on the internet, I don’t want it, who would? Do I like capacitive Multi-Touch screens? Of Course! But what’s the use if I’m broke and can’t afford the software I can get at no charge if open sourced? Can I jailbreak the iPad?

And for the kicker…. AT&T, again?!? What do we have to do to get away from these blind mice leading us into dark holes of bad reception? One person asked me why can they use their 3gs iPhone underground at train stations but not in their home or where they need to make a call? Guess they aren’t getting this device because if they prepped all of their work on this device only for it to fizzle come presentation…ouch.
