Philadelphia Eagles Sign Top Free Agent Asante Samuel
Friday February 29, 2008
The Philadelphia Eagles today signed the top rated NFL free agent, cornerback Asante Samuel, to a six-year contract, valued at $57 million. Philadelphia was Samuels only visit following the start of the NFL free agent season.
The 5'10", 185 pound Samuel is 27 years old. He was a fourth round pick of the New England Patriots in 2003 out of the University of Southern Florida.
Samuel will be entering his sixth NFL season. In all but his second season he has played in at least 15 regular season games. In his 75 career games he has 215 solo tackles and 22 interceptions. In 2007, Samuel played in all 16 regular season games with 43 solo tackles and six interceptions.
Samuel has played on two of New England's Super Bowl championship teams and was a Pro Bowl selection in 2007.
It is unclear what Samuel's signing will mean for the Eagles two current starting cornerbacks, Sheldon Brown and Lito Sheppard. It is no secret that Sheppard is unhappy with his contract which has 4 years remaining. There is a possibility that he might be traded to another team to fill another need. It is also possible that Brown might be asked to move to the safety position which he has expressed a willingness to consider.
