Top Six Tips Before you Install Vista SP1

SP1 for Vista is officially out now. There have been issues with the install reported, as can happen when you update anything. Goretsky sent these tips in, to hopefully help you bypass any troubles.

  • Before making any major changes to your system, it is always a good idea to back up your valuable data files. Vista includes a backup utility you can access by clicking on the Start Orb and typing “backup” into the Search field, or by using a Vista-compatible backup program such as Acronis True Image, NovaStor’s Novaback or Symantec Ghost.
  • Download and install the latest device drivers for your computer’s hardware. Device drivers are small programs that allows your computer’s hardware to talk with the operating system. When a service pack is released, Microsoft sometimes makes small changes to the operating systems that can cause some device drivers to perform slowly or not work very well. Check with your computer manufacturer or hardware vendor to see if any of the following have updated device drivers:
    • hard disk drive controller (especially SATA or SCSI)
    • fingerprint reader (very important if you use one)
    • network interface card
    • motherboard chipset
    • sound card
    • video card

Also, if you have an OEM-branded computer from a company like Dell, check with them to see if they have any prerequisites for installing the service pack.

  • Any software which interacts with Vista at low level may need an update as well. Examples of software that might need to be updated include backup, CD/DVD creation software, disk defragmentation and security software such as Anti-Malware and firewalls. Be sure to check with the authors of these to verify compatibility with Service Pack 1.
  • Check your hard disk drive for errors before installing the Service Pack. To do so, double-click on the Computer icon on your Desktop to view the hard disk drive, right-click on it to make the context menu pop up, and select Properties to open the properties window for the hard disk drive. The command to check the hard disk drive for errors is located on the Tools tab.
  • Defragment your hard disk drive before installing Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista. Installing a service pack can be a lengthy and disk- intensive process, as the service pack updates the all of the files which make up the operating system. Defragmenting the hard disk drive reorders the files on the hard disk drive which can speed up access to them.
  • If you do need to disable your security software before installing Service Pack 1, remember to re-enable after the service pack is finished.
  • Remember, it may take some time for the service pack to finish installing, especially if you have an older computer or many files on yours. Be patient, as it may take several hours to complete.

Number one tip : Dont use Vista! :P

Well, the first two tips are great! I actually never thought about defragmenting….but I should have, really makes your system run faster and much smoother. Backing up your data is a must! Wether or not you are installing a Service Pack 1. Many drivers don’t need to be upgraded but you should still do it if you want your system to work well. So yea, that should do it for you guys. Great tips!

Well I updated to SP1 yesterday when it came out and haven’t had any problems. The Whole Process took 30 minutes and that includes download and install. I’ve been using Windows Vista Home Premium since March 2007. 2 months after its release. And I have never had any issues. Never had any Driver issues, No BSoD’s no sudden hangs, no nothing. I think Vista is a great OS but i know that there are many people out there that have had many issues. I recommend they install SP1. If you do have issues with SP1 you can always restore back to before you installed SP1 so don’t worry.

lol…i like how you have your Leopard Disk inside the Vista case Chris.

Funny Chris… I also like that you have the OS X disc in the VISTA container…lol…

Wow, I might try out the Vista SP1 release now.

lol, this would of helped yesterday(eastern time) before my computer crashed. Now im off to sue microsoft…

Just kiddin i did install SP1 in about 45 and it worked fine. I mean after it reastared it ran normal. I did see a tad bit of performance boost when copying folders and doing things in windows explorer in general. Aslthough I quite disappointed that no visual changes were made everything got changed in the core. But vista was already working fine before I installed SP1. So not too much to say here.

I think that this is great. My friend had Vista and will probably want to update to get rid of all the bugs. This is going to be a great guide for me to use when I update Vista for her. Thanks Chris! I probably would not have known to do all of this if you had not posted it!

These tips were great i didn’t even realize sp1 was available until this but i got it and i see a sudden speed boost

Hi Chris. These are pretty good tips. I’ve been considering Vista for a few days now and it seems the negativity about it seems to be diminishing over time. So I’ll keep these tips in mind for [when] I get Vista.

Hey chris, these are great tips! I bought a computer last year and it came with Vista. I had some problems and i just went back to XP. I’ve been wanting to get a mac, I have used it before but they are a little too expensive for me.

Chris always has the most timely articles!

Great tips! :D

I have been using SP1 since its unofficial RTM in February and have had zero issues. Upon installing the service pack I did notice a pretty nice performance boost when copying files, I also noticed that explorer is now much more responsive when browsing files and folders, especially folders that have a large amount of files in them. I’m glad to see that others are seeing the performance boost as well.

I think that this service pack, although unimpressive on the surface (no cosmetic changes or new features), is a very good update for Vista. I know I am happier and I think in the long run the Vista HATRED will slowly die down. Let’s face it the RTM of Vista at launch time was anything but satisfying. I think Vista is finally becoming a good product and a very worthy upgrade from Windows XP. …..maybe now that a lot of the bugs are worked out of the system we will see a few “cool/useful” Ultimate extras.

Let’s not forget the same thing happened to the guys at Apple when OS X was first launched. Users yelled at apple that the new OS was a “public beta”. Hmm where have I heard that before ha ha. Now OS X is a very good operating system.

I think some people forget that its actually human beings developing these systems and since humans are not perfect, neither are the operating systems that they make, no matter how long they worked on it.

Take care.

Hi Chris…

I just installed Vists SP-1 … my question about it (and any other cumulative updates) is: what about all the earlier updates that this claims to include? Can I delete the earlier updates and the space they’re taking up on my HD? Do I need to; does the cumulative update overwite the included earlier updates or add to the space taken up by them?

Thanks

I just downloaded service pack 1 and so far there is nothing great that i can see visually. Is there something i’m missing or is it all security updates and performance updates? If there is nothing else then i just wasted two hours of my life on nothing.

Hello,

I have posted a slightly revised tip list for installing Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 here in my personal blog.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

Someone above said “But vista was already working fine before I installed SP1″ - lucky you! Vista had been a complete nightmare to work with. Let’s hope SP1 fixes the constant freezes, slow response time, uncompatible drivers etc.
Thanks!

SP1 is a awesome improvement, I’ve had issues with Windows Vista SP0 for quite some time and for some reason or another, however, SP1 made better on these issues, including those nagging problems with game compatibility. I agree with you completely that individuals SHOULD upgrade to SP1 as fast as possible. Only thing that bugs me is the incompatibilities with certain hardware drivers, example would be AC’97 audio and a handful of others.

som det ofte sker når ting skal opdateres. Goretsky har indsendt disse tips som forhåbentlig kan hjælpe dig med at undgå problemer. i decided today that i was going to install SP1 for windows vista
i already had everything updated because i check for updates just about every day. well i tried to install it and it failed, it didnt only fail the first time i tried it, it failed all 9 times i tried. It was very time consuming.

THIS A MUST READ!!!!http://chris.pirillo.com/2008/03/19/top-six-tips-before-you-install-vist…

Along with defragmenting your disk, I would also recommend running the “Disk Cleanup” Utility to help remove disk space if you are low.

I am very happy with SP1 so far and may consider updating a couple other computers and switching them from XP to Vista.

Wookie

I upgraded to SP1, I never thought about looking for new drivers, and consequently, I did not need any. I did notice a huge speed boost on games, going up 20 to 30fps on my game on the other hard disk drive, I have to put it down to the faster hard drive access. I would recommend this service pack for all Vista users.

The good stuff…

1. Vista SP1 has somewhat of a performance increase, at least for me…I noticed that things like animations and loading basic Explorer windows are a bit faster…but the specific loading of programs seems to have slowed dramatically.

2. Drivers…well, there are more drivers. To give you an example, Vista RTM recognized my optical drive as a simple DVD-RW drive, but Vista SP1 knows that it is a BD-ROM drive. Whether that has anything to do with the recent death of the HD-DVD, I’m not sure. But I heard that Ponzi has been having driver issues with SP1, so the drivers themselves may not be that good.

The bad stuff…

1. Installation. Installation for me took 10 HOURS…that’s right, 10 HOURS! When I first tried to install SP1 at 1pm, it gave me a list of things that I needed to do before installation would commence. It took forever to complete those things, which included the uninstallation of about 10 different programs. By the time I got to the SP1 installer again, it was 8pm, and still, SP1 took two more hours to install. That is ridiculous. SP1 should support more programs, not less. And I should mention that my computer meets recommended specs for Windows Vista Ultimate…2 GB of RAM, and the whole rest of it, so it isn’t my computer that is slow.

2. No new features. So far, nothing is much different in SP1. Windows XP SP2 had new features when it was released, but Vista SP1 seems to have no notable changes to it, except for a 1 added to the version number. I mean, there is nothing new to check out, it’s just Windows Vista…that’s about it.

Overall, my thoughts are this: Why the hell did we all anticipate this release for over a year? There is nothing to me that has really changed. It’s just Windows Vista…absolutely nothing different. I’m wondering if MS still thinks the Wow is still going with Vista enough so that they don’t have to impress us with anything new. From this vantage point, the SP1 update wasn’t that good of a tradeoff. I spent 10 hours of my time for nothing, except for some drivers, and a 1 in the version number…big whoop.

I installed this on my mac and it went fine! It didn’t even take that long either. There were some little bugs I noticed. Some folders would freeze etc and firefox crashed on me. But now that I have this running over the period of time I am on it seeming to get better =)

vista is cr@p i dont like it

People… don’t compare Windows Vista SP1 to XP SP2. SP2 could have been a whole new operating system! That was a one time thing to counter some at the time severe security issues. Service packs are meant to be update roll-ups with additional hot-patches, fixes, updates, etc but rarely in a traditional service pack has significant new features been added to the operating system. “Vista is still vista” so to speak. All the service pack was meant to address was the bugs and performance issues and I think it is a great start in the right direction from that aspect.

Microsoft never said that Service Pack 1 would include amazing new features. Its a service pack, not a new operating system.

just doing it now seems good so il try it!:p

tell u what to all of u guys i am on a p4 2.66 with 1 gb ram ati readon 9600xt agp

lemme tell u all my devices work even my 5 yr old analog tv card 90% of all my software has 6 month old or less drivers. vista has been awesome so far not a single issue.

i cant get sp1 for some reason

Hi-I put in SP/1 Vista-I didnt like that The Big Micro took out the search box–so I pemoved SP/1 and got it back.
This was one redeeming feature of Vista-basically its still there in SP/1but harder to use and access.Micro said they took it out because google was going to sue or something..Big Deal–I like Microsoft search box and right click search so im keeping the original oem Vista for the time being-Hope it dont block othe rupdate but it probably will-Good site you have
ray

dude u have pirated vista no? me too, dont upgrade if u have pirated only if u have certified cuz is sp1 they have something called CRACK KILLER and it makes all pirated vista machine unbootable, therefore you not only will not upgrade vista, but ur machine will not have an OS to boot into

me too someone give us the link

You have to install the latest update from microsoft!

There is an update you HAVE to install before microsoft lets you install it.

After I installed SP1 for Vista on my 32bit OS, The system started reading my orginal 4GB RAM rather than the 3.5 GB it normally reads !!! :)

dude, thats like impossible windows 32bit only ready 2gb [2048mb] how could it magicaly read 3.5 and 4 for you when microsoft says it doesnt work and everyone else who’s tryed it says it doesnt. POST PROOF, LIKE 3 PEOPLE HAVE DONE IT.

i’m using XP with 3Gb of RAM and its 32bit, 32bit read up to 4 GB but no more. 64bit operating systems take more can than that.

I got it… and Didnt really notice anything. But VIsta runs great on my computer. Boots fast runs things how I want them

No difference, at all.

i am runing vista now and it doesnt look so bad as we were all saying it was :)

When I installed SP1 i scared the hell out of me
*NOTE: do not live iPod plugged in while installing/rebooting :)
first, it was stuck in a DOS like phase and wouldn’t turn on. then it looked like i had to use my back up drive as it was a black GUI-less screen loading about the same amount of files in my back up drive. It scared the hell out of me as it was a brand new $1,200 computer which looked as if it just broke and microsoft was to blame.

What an arsehole!!!

vista sp1 simply fixes vista glitches and vista problems and bugs so when you get sp1 you get no more APP CRASHES or glitches

First Tip: Downgrade to XP Haha

Chris you are so FULL of **** its not funny. Everyone please keep in mind this guy is sponsored by these companies and cant say anything seriously bad about them. How do you think he can sit on his *** all day spinning this ****. EVERYONE should know if you want to roll back from a service pack, you may as well format your drive and start again.

ok I dont know why but I was checking my email and I saw someone replied to my comment so then I read it. seriously dude, I did NOT post that! It’s probably b/c my thing was still logged in as me but I dont know who put this here and frankly I dont really watch videos like this unless I need too so sorry for the misunderstanding….. actually most likely no one cares …….but I do so that’s why I posting this comment (it was probably my brother though) sorry :[

How come I haven’t receive the update through Windows Update?

I know I can download it from the site, but I’m just wondering.

I got the same problem dood. I cant get it through Windows Update.

Can I have that Windows Vista Ultimate???

I figured it out. You need to have all your drivers updated.

Installed sp1 .Couldnt log on to any websites. What a pain in the *** ,. Removed sp1 all ok .I cant believe microsoft

Windows Vista is by far the WORST Operating System ever released by Microsoft.

I work in the Geek Squad and Vista crashes on brand new computer. It’s ridiulous. Such a piece of ****. Microsoft should not have canned XP and instead should gave customers a choice. Forcing customers to BETA test vista is crazy. Vista is broken.

Hmm I wonder what’s wrong with all of your PCs. Stop tweaking so much, geeks! ;) *is a geek himself*

I’ve never had Vista crash on me, in fact, I like Vista! I don’t see what’s wrong with it, and I’m not a regular user.

[...] Top Six Tips Before you Install Vista SP1 [...]

I cannot even get my Vista 64bit OS to update to SP1… let alone find it using the automatic update option.

Furthermore, I have all kinds of crashes/lockups when playing MMO games on my Vista OS comp. I’ll be playing LoTRO (for example) and every hour or two my comp locks up and I need to conduct a hard reboot to get it operating again.

I run:
Vista 64bit Home Premium
Core 1 Extreme 6850 Quad Core Kentsfield 3.0Ghz
4GB DDR3 Corsair 1033
G15 keyboard
SLI Dual Nvidia 8800GTS

What Do You Think?
