Teen Arrested in Slashing of West Phila. High School Student

by KYW's Al Novack

Philadelphia police say a West Philadelphia High School student is in custody in connection with Monday's slashing of a 15-year-old schoolmate near the school.

Members of the Southwest Detectives unit were busy overnight interviewing people and said there could be more suspects arrested.

Investigators say they have questioned a number of people in connection with Monday afternoon's slashing. They say as many as 10 girls took part in the attack on 15-year-old Shakia West and a 16-year-old friend, near a bus stop at 48th and Spruce Streets, a block away from West Philadelphia High School (see related story).

West received more than 100 stitches for serious injuries to her face (above).

Early Wednesday morning police said at least one 16-year-old student was in custody, facing assault and related charges. The identity of that person was not immediately revealed.
