One of my clients had a Windows XP fail about 6 months back. Instead of using his recovery disk, I gave him the free Windows 7 beta download. Boy did he love it! He loved it so much that even though I told him it was about to expire, he kept on untill last week, warning message and all.
So, what were his choices now? Reinstall with his XP CD? Buy Windows 7? No sir, I gave him an Ubuntu live CD to try out. He loved that so much, he upgraded from my year old version to the latest one, by hisself (is it that easy?). He said so far that he loves the look and the software choices.
I tried to warn him that Linux likes to overwhelm users with a lot of software choices but he was ok with that. I was expecting a call from him to help him with his printer but he must’ve figured that out himself. I really didn’t anything but hand him the CD, Linux sold itself apparently.
My point to this experience is that Microsoft is about to see some dark days becuse of their Vista stumble. Users complained, and Linux listened. Have you tried it yet?
